A complete thermofluid study of a naturally cooled drum motor

drum motor f.jpg

This was an extensive study into all the cooling mechanisms inside of the client's Drum Motor Technology. In this case there was no forced cooling system and the motor was naturally cooled. The goal was to establish the maximum losses inside of  the frame that would allow safe temperature of all components. Investigation of numerous parameters such as frame length, oil level, drum shell speed, rotor speed, housing materials frame, radiation were conducted and a qualitative assessment of each parameters was made. The ultimate goal was to provide the client with clear set of guidelines to make decisions and to provide solutions to improve the heat dissipation in the motor.

The simulations required the following advanced skills to analyse the following phenomena:

-Natural convection in oil bath

-Multiphase fluid modelling (oil and air)

-Rotating Bodies (mathematical rotation model and Moving Reference Frame)

-Conjugate heat transfer

-Viscous dissipation inside the rotor-stator

-Natural and rotational flow over the frame.
